Poliomyelitis

Overview

Poliomyelitis (polio) is a disease caused by the poliovirus. Most infections are asymptomatic, but a small proportion develop flaccid paralysis, most often of the lower limbs, which can lead to permanent disability.

Symptoms

• Fever
• Sore throat
• Limb pain
• Flaccid muscle paralysis
• Reduced muscle tone

Treatment

Treatment centers on symptomatic support and rehabilitation training during the paralytic phase, with rest and nursing care in the acute phase; vaccination is an effective preventive measure.

Dietary advice

Eat a balanced, easily digestible, high-protein, high-vitamin diet to ensure adequate energy to support recovery.
