Spinal Cord Injury

Overview

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is damage to the spinal cord that disrupts the transmission of signals between the brain and the body below the level of injury, causing partial or complete loss of sensory and motor function. It commonly affects mobility, sensation, bladder and bowel control, and sexual function.

• Limb paralysis
• Loss of sensation
• Bladder and bowel dysfunction
• Muscle weakness

Treatment

Acute-phase management focuses on spinal stabilization, surgical decompression, and medication; long-term rehabilitation and care follow.

Dietary advice

A high-protein, high-fiber diet with ample fluids to prevent constipation, plus vitamins to boost resistance.
