Acute Laryngitis

Overview

Laryngitis is inflammation of the larynx, the body's main voice-producing structure. Acute laryngitis is usually part of a viral upper respiratory tract infection and commonly causes hoarseness, cough, and throat pain lasting up to a few weeks.

Symptoms

• Hoarseness
• Throat pain
• Dry cough
• Foreign body sensation

Treatment

Rest the voice, treat infection, and use nebulization therapy; laryngeal obstruction requires emergency management.

Dietary advice

Eat a bland diet, drink plenty of warm water, and avoid spicy foods, tobacco, and alcohol.
