Acute Myelitis

Overview

Transverse myelitis is a nonspecific inflammatory lesion of the spinal cord that often follows infection. Inflammation involves several spinal segments, most commonly the thoracic cord, producing transverse cord damage.

Symptoms

• Weakness of both lower limbs
• Sensory level
• Urinary dysfunction
• Limb numbness
• Fecal incontinence

Treatment

Use corticosteroids early, combined with neurotrophic drugs, prevention of complications, and rehabilitation.

Dietary advice

Eat a high-protein, high-fiber diet and drink plenty of water to prevent urinary infection and constipation.
