Acute Glomerulonephritis

Overview

Acute glomerulonephritis is inflammation of the renal glomeruli, commonly occurring as a complication of bacterial infection, typically following streptococcal skin infection or pharyngitis. It is also known as postinfectious or poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis.

Symptoms

• Hematuria
• Edema
• Hypertension
• Oliguria
• Proteinuria

Treatment

Treatment is mainly rest and symptomatic care, controlling blood pressure and relieving edema with diuretics, with antibiotics for streptococcal infection.

Dietary advice

Restrict salt and fluids, appropriately limit protein intake during the acute phase, and avoid spicy foods.
