Acute Gastroenteritis

Overview

Gastroenteritis is inflammation of the stomach and intestines, causing diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and cramping. It is most often caused by viral infection, though bacteria and parasites can also be responsible.

Symptoms

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Abdominal pain
• Diarrhea
• Fever

Treatment

Focus on rehydration and correcting electrolyte imbalance; it is usually self-limiting, with antibiotics used only for more severe bacterial infection.

Dietary advice

In the early stage take small frequent sips of bland fluids, and avoid greasy, raw, and cold foods.
