Acute Bronchitis

Overview

Acute bronchitis is inflammation of the bronchi, over 90% of which is caused by viral infection. Symptoms include cough with sputum, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest discomfort, usually lasting about three weeks.

Symptoms

• Cough
• Sputum production
• Low-grade fever
• Retrosternal discomfort
• Fatigue

Treatment

Most cases are viral and are managed with rest, plenty of fluids, and symptomatic treatment such as cough suppressants and expectorants. Antibiotics are used only when bacterial infection is confirmed and are not recommended routinely.

Dietary advice

Drink plenty of warm water, eat a light diet, and consume moderate amounts of foods that soothe the lungs and loosen phlegm. Avoid spicy, greasy foods, tobacco, and alcohol.
