Herpes Labialis (Cold Sores)

Overview

Herpes labialis, or recurrent cold sores, is an infection appearing on the lips or edge of the nostrils, caused by the contagious herpes simplex virus type 1. In the early stage the affected area itches and burns, then blisters form and progress to ulcers.

Symptoms

• Clustered blisters at the lip margin
• Burning pain
• Local itching
• Crusting

Treatment

Caused by herpes simplex virus; use topical or oral antiviral drugs early, rest well, and avoid triggers of recurrence.

Dietary advice

Eat a light diet, drink plenty of water and take vitamins, and avoid spicy food and staying up late as triggers.
