Aphthous Ulcer (Canker Sore)

Overview

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis, commonly known as canker sores or mouth ulcers, is a common condition characterized by the repeated formation of benign, non-contagious oral ulcers in otherwise healthy individuals. The cause is not fully understood but involves a T-cell-mediated immune response triggered by multiple factors.

Symptoms

• Oral pain
• Ulcerated surface
• Pain when eating
• Burning sensation
• Local redness and swelling

Treatment

It is usually self-limiting; management focuses on symptomatic pain relief and maintaining oral hygiene. Topical medications can promote healing. Seek medical care for recurrent or persistent ulcers.

Dietary advice

Eat a light diet, take in more foods rich in vitamins B and C, and avoid spicy, very hot, and coarse, hard foods.
