Appendicitis

Appendicitis

General Surgery

Overview

Appendicitis is an acute digestive-system disease caused by inflammation of the appendix.

Symptoms

  • Migrating right lower abdominal pain
  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Tenderness and rebound tenderness

Treatment

Acute suppurative appendicitis usually requires prompt surgical removal of the appendix; some early, uncomplicated cases may be treated conservatively with antibiotics under a physician's evaluation. Prompt medical attention is needed for diagnosis.

Dietary advice

Fasting is required during the acute phase per medical advice; after surgery, progress gradually from liquids to a normal, light, easily digestible diet.
