Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome

Overview

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is an iatrogenic complication of ovulation-induction therapy in assisted reproduction, caused by an excessive ovarian response to medication. It presents with enlarged ovaries and increased capillary permeability leading to ascites and pleural effusion, and can be life-threatening in severe cases.

Symptoms

• Abdominal bloating
• Abdominal pain
• Reduced urine output
• Nausea

Treatment

Mild cases resolve with rest, observation, and fluids; severe cases require hospitalization to correct blood volume and electrolytes, with paracentesis if needed.

Dietary advice

Eat a high-protein diet with adequate fluids in small frequent meals, and avoid overly salty foods.
