Dementia with Lewy Bodies

Overview

Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is a progressive dementia associated with widespread deposition of abnormal alpha-synuclein (Lewy bodies) in the brain. It features fluctuating cognition, visual hallucinations, REM sleep behavior disorder, and parkinsonian motor symptoms.

Symptoms

• Fluctuating cognition
• Visual hallucinations
• Bradykinesia
• Limb rigidity

Treatment

Use cholinesterase inhibitors to improve cognitive and psychiatric symptoms, manage motor symptoms carefully, and avoid antipsychotics that can worsen symptoms.

Dietary advice

Eat a balanced diet rich in dark-colored vegetables and fruits and unsaturated fatty acids, with adequate hydration.
