Chronic Glomerulonephritis
NephrologyOverview
Chronic glomerulonephritis is a group of glomerular diseases characterized by proteinuria, hematuria, edema, and hypertension, that progress slowly. Over the long term it can lead to a gradual decline in renal function and eventually kidney failure.
Symptoms
- Edema
- Proteinuria
- Hematuria
- Hypertension
- Fatigue
Treatment
Management centers on controlling blood pressure, reducing proteinuria, and protecting renal function, commonly using ACEIs or ARBs and treating the underlying cause, with regular monitoring of kidney function.
Dietary advice
Follow a high-quality low-protein, low-salt diet and restrict sodium to control edema and blood pressure. Avoid excessive high-potassium and high-phosphorus foods.
