Chronic bronchitis is inflammation of the bronchi, defined as a productive cough for at least three months a year over two or more consecutive years. Smoking is the most common cause, and most patients have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

- Chronic cough
- Sputum production
- Shortness of breath
- Recurrent episodes
Treatment
Stop smoking and avoid irritants; treat infection and use expectorants and bronchodilators during acute exacerbations, and strengthen exercise to improve fitness during stable periods.
Dietary advice
Light diet, plenty of fluids, and moderate intake of lung-nourishing foods.
