Hemifacial Spasm

Overview

Hemifacial spasm is a rare neuromuscular disorder marked by irregular, involuntary contractions of the muscles on one side of the face. It usually begins in the muscles around the eye and gradually spreads, often caused by vascular compression of the facial nerve.

Symptoms

• Twitching of one eyelid
• Facial twitching
• Twitching at the corner of the mouth
• Worsening with stress
• Involuntary contractions

Treatment

Mild cases can be treated with medication or botulinum toxin injection, while marked vascular compression may require microvascular decompression surgery.

Dietary advice

Eat a bland diet, reduce caffeine intake, and ensure adequate sleep.
