Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation

Overview

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a clinical syndrome in which, triggered by certain conditions, widespread microthrombi form throughout the microcirculation, followed by consumption of clotting factors and platelets leading to secondary fibrinolysis, generalized bleeding, and microcirculatory failure.

Symptoms

• Widespread bleeding
• Skin ecchymosis
• Shock
• Organ dysfunction
• Thrombus formation

Treatment

Treatment fundamentally requires active management of the underlying disease, together with comprehensive measures such as anticoagulation and clotting factor replacement; as a critical emergency it requires resuscitation under intensive care.

Dietary advice

Focus on treatment and nutritional support; those able to eat should have a light, easily digestible diet, per medical advice.
