Enterobiasis (Pinworm Infection)

Overview

Enterobiasis is a parasitic infection caused by the pinworm Enterobius vermicularis living in the human intestine, spread mainly by the anus-hand-mouth route and most common in children. The female worm lays eggs around the anus, typically causing intense itching of the anal and perineal area at night, which can disrupt sleep and mood.

Symptoms

• Anal itching
• Worse at night
• Restless sleep
• Poor appetite
• Irritability

Treatment

Take anthelmintic medication under medical guidance, maintain personal and household hygiene, and treat the whole family if needed to prevent recurrence.

Dietary advice

Eat a balanced diet, wash hands before meals and after using the toilet, keep nails trimmed short, and avoid raw or unclean foods.
