Hydrocephalus

Overview

Hydrocephalus is abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid within the brain, causing increased intracranial pressure. Older patients may have headache, double vision, loss of balance, and incontinence, while infants show rapid head enlargement.

Symptoms

• Headache
• Vomiting
• Blurred vision
• Unsteady gait
• Cognitive decline

Treatment

Depending on the cause, perform surgical drainage such as a ventriculoperitoneal shunt to relieve elevated intracranial pressure.

Dietary advice

Eat a bland, low-salt diet, ensure adequate nutrition, and resume eating gradually after surgery.
