Diaper Rash

Overview

Diaper rash (irritant diaper dermatitis) is redness and inflammation of the skin in areas that directly contact urine and stool, such as around the anus, buttocks, perineum, genitals, and groin folds, with scattered papules or blisters. It occurs because urea and intestinal enzymes in urine and stool irritate the skin when left on it too long. It is most common in infants from birth to age 1.

• Papules
• Skin breakdown
• Local moisture
• Crying

Treatment

Change diapers frequently, keep the buttocks clean and dry, apply diaper cream, and use medication as directed for severe cases or infection.

Dietary advice

Feed mainly with breast milk or formula; when introducing solid foods, watch for worsening and avoid irritating foods.
