Urethral Stones

Overview

Urethral stones are typically kidney stones that have traveled down into the urethra. They form from mineral crystals originating in the kidney's collecting system and can obstruct urine flow, causing pain during urination.

Symptoms

• Painful urination
• Difficulty urinating
• Interrupted urine stream
• Hematuria
• Urethral stinging pain

Treatment

Smaller stones may be flushed out by drinking plenty of water, while larger or impacted stones require urethroscopic removal or lithotripsy.

Dietary advice

Drink large amounts of water, eat a light diet, and reduce high-oxalate and high-salt foods.
