Urinary Tract Infection

Overview

A urinary tract infection is an infection of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, or urethra caused by various pathogens, most commonly Escherichia coli. It is divided into upper urinary tract infection (such as pyelonephritis) and lower urinary tract infection (such as urethritis and cystitis).

Symptoms

• Urinary frequency
• Urinary urgency
• Painful urination
• Flank pain
• Fever

Treatment

Management centers on treatment with sensitive antibiotics, taking an adequate full course, along with drinking plenty of fluids to increase urination. Patients with recurrent infections should identify and address underlying causes.

Dietary advice

Drink plenty of water and urinate frequently. Eat a light diet, and avoid spicy, irritating foods and alcohol.
