Drowning
EmergencyOverview
Drowning is a condition of injury caused by submersion in water or another liquid. Liquid entering the lungs causes hypoxia and then asphyxia. It is a leading cause of death in children under 12 in many countries and is a major global public safety problem.
Symptoms
- Difficulty breathing
- Water gushing from the mouth and nose
- Impaired consciousness
- Cyanosis
- Cessation of breathing and heartbeat
Treatment
Immediately clear the airway and perform on-site cardiopulmonary resuscitation to restore ventilation and oxygenation as soon as possible, then transfer to hospital to correct hypoxia and complications.
Dietary advice
After the condition stabilizes, gradually transition from a liquid diet, keep food light and easily digestible, and supplement nutrition and electrolytes.
