Herpangina

Overview

Herpangina is a painful oral infection caused by coxsackievirus. It is usually caused by a specific strain of coxsackievirus A, but may also be caused by coxsackievirus B or echovirus. Most cases occur in summer and mainly affect children, though it can occasionally occur in adolescents and adults.

Symptoms

• Fever
• Sore throat
• Blisters in the throat
• Drooling
• Refusal to eat

Treatment

Treatment is mainly symptomatic and supportive, focusing on fever reduction, hydration, and oral care; most cases resolve on their own.

Dietary advice

Eat cool, bland liquid or semi-liquid foods, and avoid foods that are too hot, sour, or spicy.
