Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
Obstetrics & GynecologyOverview
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an infection of the female uterus or fallopian tubes, and by some definitions the ovaries as well. It often has no obvious symptoms but may cause lower abdominal pain, vaginal discharge, fever, burning on urination, painful intercourse, and irregular bleeding. It can lead to long-term complications such as infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and chronic pelvic pain, and 75-90% of cases involve gonococcal or chlamydial infection.
Symptoms
- Lower abdominal pain
- Increased vaginal discharge
- Fever
- Lumbosacral soreness
- Menstrual irregularity
Treatment
Treatment centers on a standardized full course of antibiotics; follow medical advice on timely medication to prevent progression to a chronic condition.
Dietary advice
Eat a light, easily digestible diet, drink plenty of water, and avoid raw, cold, spicy, and greasy foods.
