Dermatomyositis

Overview

Dermatomyositis is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the muscles, characterized by a skin rash and progressive muscle weakness. Symptoms may develop suddenly or over months and include muscle weakness, weight loss, fever, and photosensitivity.

• Muscle weakness
• Heliotrope eyelid rash
• Muscle pain
• Difficulty swallowing
• Skin rash

Treatment

Corticosteroids are the mainstay, combined with immunosuppressants when needed, along with rehabilitation exercise.

Dietary advice

A high-protein, high-calorie, easily digestible diet with vitamin supplementation; avoid overexertion.
