Vestibular Neuritis

Overview

Vestibular neuritis is an inflammation of the vestibular nerve, usually caused by a viral infection. It causes prolonged vertigo without significant hearing loss, and is closely related to labyrinthitis, which involves inflammation of the inner ear labyrinth affecting both the cochlea and vestibular system.

Symptoms

• Sudden vertigo
• Nausea and vomiting
• Unsteady standing
• Nystagmus
• Balance disturbance

Treatment

Vestibular suppressants and antiemetics are used in the acute phase, followed by early vestibular rehabilitation exercises once symptoms ease.

Dietary advice

Eat a light, easily digestible diet, taking small frequent meals when experiencing vertigo and vomiting.
