Hydrocele

Overview

A hydrocele is an accumulation of clear fluid within the tunica vaginalis surrounding the testicle, causing painless enlargement of the affected side of the scrotum. It may result from a defect in fluid absorption, or secondary to inflammation or a testicular tumor.

Symptoms

• Scrotal enlargement
• Scrotal heaviness
• Positive transillumination test
• Painless local swelling
• Cystic mass

Treatment

Infants may be observed while awaiting spontaneous resolution, while persistent or large hydroceles are treated surgically with procedures such as eversion of the tunica vaginalis.

Dietary advice

Light diet, eat plenty of vegetables and fruits, and keep bowels regular.
