Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy

Overview

Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is a pregnancy-related liver condition whose main symptom is skin itching, often severe and worse at night. There is usually no initial rash, though scratching can cause skin lesions. Other symptoms include jaundice and right upper abdominal discomfort. It usually develops in late pregnancy and is diagnosed by symptoms and elevated serum bile acid levels. Management includes early delivery, ursodeoxycholic acid, and antihistamines.

• Fatigue

Treatment

Under medical guidance, use medication to relieve itching and lower bile acids, enhance fetal monitoring, and terminate pregnancy at an appropriate time if needed.

Dietary advice

Eat a bland, low-fat diet, avoid greasy foods, consume plenty of vegetables, fruits, and high-quality protein, and follow medical advice for prenatal checkups.
