Overview

Heat stroke is the most severe form of heat illness, caused by prolonged exposure to high outdoor temperature and humidity or direct sunlight, resulting in an abnormally elevated body temperature that does not subside. It is a critical condition with a high mortality rate.

Symptoms

  • High fever
  • Impaired consciousness
  • Absence of sweating or profuse sweating
  • Convulsions
  • Multi-organ dysfunction

Treatment

Immediately remove from the hot environment and cool rapidly, give fluids to maintain circulation, protect vital organ function, and prevent and treat complications.

Dietary advice

Replenish fluids and electrolytes during recovery, eat light, easily digestible foods, and avoid activity in high-temperature environments.
