Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)

Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)

Ophthalmology

Overview

Amblyopia is a visual disorder in which the brain cannot fully process images from one eye and over time favors the other eye, causing reduced vision without any organic eye disease. It usually develops in early childhood and is best detected and treated as early as possible.

Symptoms

  • Reduced corrected vision
  • One or both eyes
  • Impaired stereopsis
  • Blurred vision
  • Common in children

Treatment

Correct refractive errors and use occlusion training as early as possible during visual development; the younger the child, the better the outcome.

Dietary advice

Eat a balanced diet with plenty of vitamin- and protein-rich foods to support visual development.
