Melanocytic Nevus (Mole)

Overview

A melanocytic nevus is a benign skin tumor composed of nevus cells and is a common pigmented skin lesion. It can occur anywhere on the body as brown or black macules, papules, or nodules of varying sizes; the vast majority are benign, with only a very small number becoming malignant.

Symptoms

• Brown or black macules/papules
• Well-defined borders
• Varying sizes
• Smooth surface
• Slow growth

Treatment

Usually benign and requiring no treatment; if it enlarges rapidly, ulcerates, or changes color, seek prompt medical excision and pathological examination.

Dietary advice

A normal balanced diet is sufficient; use sun protection and avoid repeated friction and irritation.
