Upper Respiratory Tract Infection
PulmonologyOverview
An upper respiratory tract infection is an acute infection of the nose, sinuses, pharynx, larynx, or trachea, mostly caused by viruses. It includes the common cold, influenza, nasopharyngitis, tonsillitis, and laryngitis.
Symptoms
- Nasal congestion
- Runny nose
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Sneezing
- Low-grade fever
Treatment
Most cases are viral and are managed with rest, plenty of fluids, and symptomatic treatment, using antipyretic analgesics to relieve discomfort. Antibiotics are ineffective against viral infections and are not recommended routinely.
Dietary advice
Drink plenty of warm water, eat a light, easily digestible diet, and take adequate vitamin C-rich fruits. Avoid spicy and greasy foods.
