Renal Tubular Acidosis

Overview

Renal tubular acidosis is a condition in which the kidneys fail to properly acidify the urine, leading to accumulation of acid in the body and metabolic acidosis. It results from defective bicarbonate reabsorption or inadequate hydrogen ion secretion in the renal tubules, with several types caused by different underlying conditions.

Symptoms

• Fatigue
• Muscle weakness
• Polyuria and thirst
• Bone pain
• Growth retardation

Treatment

Correct acidosis and electrolyte disturbances, supplement alkali and potassium, and treat the underlying disease while preventing kidney stones.

Dietary advice

Supplement potassium and alkali appropriately according to type, drink plenty of water, and eat a light, balanced diet.
