Retinal Detachment

Overview

Retinal detachment is an acute eye condition in which the retina separates from its underlying supporting tissue. Symptoms include increased floaters, flashes of light, and a curtain-like shadow over part of the visual field. Without prompt treatment, the entire retina can detach, causing vision loss and even blindness.

• Shadow in the visual field
• Flashes of light
• Visual field defect
• Sudden vision loss
• Increased floaters

Treatment

An ophthalmic emergency requiring early surgical reattachment such as laser photocoagulation or vitrectomy; avoid strenuous activity.

Dietary advice

Eat a light diet with eye-nourishing foods, and avoid eye strain and strenuous activity.
