Food Poisoning
EmergencyOverview
Foodborne illness, commonly known as food poisoning, refers to any illness caused by eating food contaminated with pathogenic bacteria, viruses, parasites, chemicals, or natural toxins (such as poisonous mushrooms). Food poisoning is a non-contagious acute or subacute illness, distinct from other foodborne diseases.
Symptoms
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Fever
- Fatigue
Treatment
Management focuses on rehydration and correcting water-electrolyte imbalances; mild cases use oral rehydration, while severe cases require intravenous fluids. Seek prompt medical care for severe symptoms or signs of dehydration or bloody stools.
Dietary advice
During the acute phase, a light liquid or semi-liquid diet is advisable, with small frequent sips of water, avoiding greasy and irritating foods.
