Chickenpox

Overview

Chickenpox (varicella) is a highly contagious acute infectious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), presenting mainly with a rash and possible fever, fatigue, and headache, usually lasting 4-7 days. The rash is often itchy and progresses rapidly from red macules to papules, blisters, and crusts. It is usually mild and self-limiting in healthy children but can be more severe in adolescents, adults, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals.

• Fever
• Red maculopapular rash
• Blisters
• Itching
• Crusting

Treatment

Mostly self-limiting, managed with symptomatic care and isolation; avoid scratching and seek prompt medical care for severe symptoms.

Dietary advice

Eat a light, easily digestible diet, drink plenty of water, and avoid spicy, trigger, and greasy foods.
