Tennis Elbow
OrthopedicsOverview
Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is chronic strain-related inflammation where the common extensor tendon of the forearm attaches to the lateral epicondyle of the humerus. It mainly presents with pain on the outer side of the elbow and weakness when gripping objects or wringing a towel, and is common in people who repeatedly extend the wrist forcefully.
Symptoms
- Outer elbow pain
- Decreased grip strength
- Pain with activity
- Tenderness
- Aching
Treatment
Managed mainly with rest, avoiding repetitive strain, physical therapy, and symptomatic pain relief; stubborn cases may be treated with local injection or shockwave therapy.
Dietary advice
Maintain a balanced diet with appropriate high-quality protein, and rest and keep the affected limb warm.
