Congenital Hypothyroidism

Congenital Hypothyroidism

Pediatrics

Overview

Congenital hypothyroidism is a deficiency of thyroid hormone present at birth. Without early treatment it causes growth failure and irreversible intellectual disability, so newborn screening and prompt treatment are essential.

Symptoms

  • Feeding difficulty
  • Sluggish responses
  • Prolonged jaundice
  • Constipation

Treatment

Start thyroid hormone replacement as early as possible after diagnosis, take it regularly for life, and monitor thyroid function periodically to adjust the dose.

Dietary advice

Ensure normal feeding and balanced nutrition, and per medical advice separate calcium-rich and soy foods from medication times.
