Overview

Sialadenitis is inflammation of the salivary glands, which can be caused by infection, duct obstruction, or reduced saliva secretion. It presents with glandular swelling and pain that worsens during eating, sometimes with pus discharge from the duct opening and fever.

  • Glandular swelling
  • Local pain
  • Swelling and pain aggravated during eating
  • Pus discharge from the duct opening
  • Fever

Treatment

Anti-infection and local physiotherapy in the acute phase, promote saliva secretion and drainage; duct dilation or gland excision for chronic recurrent cases.

Dietary advice

Drink plenty of water, eat acidic foods to stimulate saliva secretion, and keep the diet light and easily digestible while avoiding spicy food.
