Mesenteric Lymphadenitis in Children

Overview

Mesenteric lymphadenitis in children is nonspecific inflammation of the mesenteric lymph nodes, usually secondary to a viral or bacterial upper respiratory or intestinal infection, most common in preschool and school-age children. It presents mainly with episodic abdominal pain, usually in the right lower abdomen or around the navel, often with fever.

Symptoms

• Periumbilical or right lower abdominal pain
• Recurrent episodes
• Low-grade fever
• Nausea
• Poor appetite

Treatment

It is usually self-limiting; rest and symptomatic treatment are recommended, with anti-infective treatment as directed for infection, and appendicitis must be excluded.

Dietary advice

Eat a bland, easily digestible diet in small frequent meals, avoid raw, cold, and greasy foods, and eat warm, soft foods during abdominal pain.
