Scarlet Fever

Overview

Scarlet fever is an illness caused by group A Streptococcus infection. Symptoms include sore throat, fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes, and a characteristic red rash, with a sandpaper-like red tongue. It usually affects children aged 5 to 15. It spreads through coughing, sneezing, and contact. It can be treated with antibiotics, which prevent most complications, and the prognosis is generally very good.

• Skin desquamation

Treatment

Use a full course of antibiotics promptly, rest and isolate, manage fever symptomatically, and prevent complications.

Dietary advice

Eat a bland, easily digestible liquid or semi-liquid diet, drink plenty of water, and avoid spicy, irritating foods.
