Neonatal Jaundice
PediatricsOverview
Jaundice is a yellowing or greenish discoloration of the skin, sclera, and mucous membranes caused by excessive bilirubin in the body. Neonatal jaundice appears within the first three days after birth and mostly resolves on its own. However, if bilirubin is very high or jaundice persists too long, it can cause brain damage known as kernicterus (bilirubin encephalopathy).
Symptoms
- Yellowing of the skin
- Yellowing of the sclera
- Poor appetite
- Drowsiness
Treatment
Physiologic jaundice usually resolves on its own, while pathologic jaundice requires prompt medical attention and treatments such as phototherapy under a physician's guidance.
Dietary advice
Ensure adequate feeding to promote bilirubin excretion; breastfed infants should be fed on demand.
