Neonatal Omphalitis

Overview

Neonatal omphalitis is acute inflammation caused by bacterial invasion of the umbilical stump, usually resulting from improper care during or after cord cutting. It presents with redness, swelling, exudation, or purulent discharge at and around the umbilicus, and in severe cases can spread and cause sepsis.

Symptoms

• Redness and swelling of the umbilicus
• Exudation
• Foul odor
• Purulent discharge
• Redness of the surrounding skin

Treatment

Keep the umbilicus clean and dry, apply local disinfection, and seek prompt care with antibiotic treatment as directed if infection is evident.

Dietary advice

Feed mainly with breast milk or formula, ensure the infant gets adequate nutrition and rest, and the mother should maintain a balanced diet.
