Angioedema

Overview

Angioedema is localized swelling of the dermis, subcutaneous tissue, and mucous membranes, which can affect the face, tongue, throat, abdomen, and limbs. It is often associated with urticaria and develops within minutes to hours, mediated by histamine or bradykinin.

Symptoms

• Localized swelling
• Eyelid swelling
• Lip swelling
• No itching

Treatment

Avoid triggers and take oral antihistamines; laryngeal edema and other acute emergencies require epinephrine and urgent care.

Dietary advice

Avoid known food allergens and eat a bland diet.
