Thrombocytopenic Purpura

Hematology

Overview

Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is a bleeding disorder in which platelets are reduced in the peripheral blood due to immune-mediated platelet destruction. It is the most common form of thrombocytopenic purpura, an acquired autoimmune disease characterized by isolated thrombocytopenia without another clinically evident cause of low platelet count.

Symptoms

  • Skin petechiae
  • Ecchymosis
  • Gum bleeding
  • Nosebleeds
  • Heavy menstrual flow

Treatment

The cause should be identified and standardized treatment carried out under the guidance of a hematologist, with attention to avoiding trauma and bleeding risk.

Dietary advice

Eat a light, easily digestible diet with plenty of vitamin-rich soft foods, and avoid hard, coarse foods.
