Hemophilia

Overview

Hemophilia is a mostly inherited disorder in which the body is unable to form blood clots properly, causing prolonged bleeding, easy bruising, and an increased risk of joint or brain hemorrhage. It is classified as type A (factor VIII deficiency) or type B (factor IX deficiency).

Symptoms

• Spontaneous bleeding
• Joint hemorrhage
• Muscle hematoma
• Difficulty stopping bleeding
• Subcutaneous bruising

Treatment

Treatment centers on replacement therapy with the corresponding clotting factor, with prevention and prompt management of bleeding, avoidance of trauma and vigorous impact, and standardized specialist management.

Dietary advice

Eat a balanced diet to ensure adequate nutrition, favor vitamin-rich soft foods, and avoid hard foods that may injure the oral mucosa and cause bleeding.
