Polyhydramnios
Obstetrics & GynecologyOverview
Polyhydramnios is an excessive amount of amniotic fluid in the uterus during pregnancy, occurring in about 1% of pregnancies. It is typically diagnosed when the amniotic fluid index exceeds 24 cm. There are two clinical forms: chronic (gradual accumulation) and acute (rapid increase over a short period). Its opposite is oligohydramnios.
Symptoms
- Abdominal distension
- Difficulty breathing
- Lower limb edema
- Increased uterine tension
- Unclear fetal position
Treatment
Identify and address the cause; mild cases are closely monitored, symptomatic cases require medical management, and fetal malformation should be watched for.
Dietary advice
Moderately restrict salt to control edema, maintain balanced nutrition, and follow medical advice on diet with regular prenatal checkups.
