Eustachian Tube Dysfunction

Eustachian Tube Dysfunction

ENT

Overview

Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) refers to symptoms and signs caused by impaired regulation of middle ear pressure. Common symptoms include ear fullness, a feeling of pressure or ear pain, and sometimes tinnitus or muffled hearing. Causes include upper respiratory infection, allergic rhinitis, and pressure changes.

Symptoms

  • Feeling of ear fullness
  • Reduced hearing
  • Muffled sensation in the ear
  • Autophony (increased perception of one's own voice)

Treatment

Treat the underlying nasopharyngeal disease, perform Eustachian tube inflation and use intranasal decongestants; balloon dilation may be used in refractory cases.

Dietary advice

Eat a light diet, avoid spicy irritants to reduce nasopharyngeal congestion, and drink plenty of water to keep the mucosa moist.
