Overview

Lumbar spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal in the lumbar region that compresses the spinal nerves. It commonly presents with low back pain, leg pain, numbness, and neurogenic intermittent claudication.

Symptoms

  • Intermittent claudication
  • Lower limb numbness
  • Low back and leg pain
  • Worse with prolonged standing

Treatment

Mild cases are managed with bed rest, medication, physical therapy, and back muscle exercises; severe cases require surgical decompression.

Dietary advice

A balanced diet with weight control and adequate calcium and protein to protect the spine.
