Lumbar Disc Herniation

Orthopedics

Overview

Lumbar disc herniation occurs when the annulus fibrosus of a spinal disc degenerates and ruptures, allowing the nucleus pulposus to displace and compress surrounding tissues. It commonly results from age-related degeneration, trauma, or strain.

Symptoms

  • Low back pain
  • Radiating leg pain
  • Numbness
  • Limited mobility
  • Weakness

Treatment

Most patients improve with bed rest, back muscle exercises, physical therapy, and symptomatic pain relief. Surgery may be considered for refractory symptoms or marked nerve compression.

Dietary advice

Maintain a reasonable body weight, eat a balanced diet with adequate calcium, and avoid prolonged sitting and lifting while bending.
